Priorities – what are they?
Priorities are a reflection of what matters in your heart and soul. At the end of your life, people will remember you by your priorities. That may sound a little intense; however, when we are running from one thing to the next, sometimes we need a dose of levity to shake us out of living life on “autopilot.”
Most people will say family, health, and success are priorities but don’t take the time to define it more. We are so busy running kids here and there, going to this commitment or that one, cleaning the house and folding laundry…we barely have time to think for ourselves, much less define “family,” “health,” and “success.”
If you are feeling a little out of sorts, no worries, I used to be as well. After having two kids in two years, my life was dramatically different and I lived under a pile of laundry and dirty dishes. Becoming a mother was unlike anything else I had experienced in life. My priorities were keeping my children alive and not crying every day. “Define” family, health, and success…ha! I was lucky if I could spell those words!
When I did start to come out of my own mom fog it took a little while to re-engage my brain.
The first step for me was to Brain Dump. Get my life on a piece of paer. I took all of the appointments, to do’s, and commitments and wrote them down.
At that point, my head almost exploded. How could I have so many things to do when I was a stay at home mom? No wonder I never had time for myself.
I was finally ready to start defining my priorities on a deeper level. The mess of my calendar was infuriating. If our life was out of control with house chores and commitments and my kids weren’t even school age, how would I cope 5 years down the road? Looking at the calendar was a wake-up call. I had to define family, health, success for our family or the rest of the world would do it for me. And I’ll be honest, the world’s definitions fall short of my hopes and dreams. It was time to focus and draft some priority definitions for our family.
